Journey with helicopter and your knowledgeable guide in to the mighty Mount Earnslaw, the spectacular landscape of Middle-earth. Land besides the awe-inspiring Earnslaw Glacier, where the hanging glacier looms above and waterfalls cascade all around. Return to Queenstown joining Nomad Safaris for a bespoke 4WD tour of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit filming locations that capture the breathtaking natural beauty of New Zealand.

The helicopter ride to the glacier is an adventure itself travelling up the Lake and over the hamlet of Glenorchy, the subject of a tv movie – “Top of The Lake”.   Approaching Mount Earnslaw it is easy to see why this was selected to portray Caradhras, a mighty peak of the Misty Mountains described by Tolkien.  Snow covered and glacially draped often with a hint of cloud, sky piecer the Maori called it.  Landing in two locations used in the first Hobbit movie, along the ridge line and then under the glacier surrounded by waterfalls and ice falls.  A surrounding never to be forgot.   The ride in and out will give the Gwahir, king of the eagles eye view of the region used for the elven forest of Lothlorien and the headquarters of the former great white wizard, Saruman, known as the Wizards Veil, Isengard and surrounded by Fangorn forest.

‘A day in paradise’

The Wakatipu region boasts some of the best trout fishing in the world. Remote high country lakes and rivers contain trophy fish that fisherman until now could only dream of catching.

Heliworks Queenstown has for many years been providing access around Queenstown to the pristine trout filled streams and rivers in the using its modern helicopter fleet.  Within 15 minutes we can have you on the banks of some of the southern alps most famous fisheries.

Get in touch with us for our set transfer rates to some rivers in the Queenstown area. Please note that the open season on these rivers is the 1st November – 31st May.

Please note that fishing on the Lochy, Greenstone and Caples Rivers require that every angler have a Backcountry License Endorsement on their fishing license. 

Backcountry Licence Endorsements

Please read the following information and click the link below to apply for your Backcountry Endorsement.

To fish a designated backcountry fishery a Backcountry Endorsement is required on your licence. You first require one of these qualifying Whole Season Sports Fishing Licences:

  • Whole Season (Adult, Junior or Child)                    
  • Family                  
  • Loyal Senior                       
  • Local Area (only qualifies for an endorsement in that region) 
  • Non Resident   

If you are a visitor from overseas you must buy a Non-Resident Licence. 

Once you have purchased a qualifying licence you are then eligible for a Backcountry Endorsement.

Also please note that the Greenstone River has a controlled fishery period from 1st February to 31st March each season on the Greenstone River.  A controlled fishery license will not be available until around January and will need to be applied for either by yourself or your guide (http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/otago-greenstone-controlled-fishery).

We encourage all parties hiking/fishing/hunting in remote areas to have or hire a personal locator beacon/SAT Phone as even the most experienced person can run in to problems in the wild.  You can hire these either from Film Radios 021 533 887 or Queenstown Radio Services 03 442 2357
