Rapid Aerial Response for Search and Rescue Across Remote Terrain
Heliworks Queenstown works closely with local Search and Rescue (SAR) teams to provide aerial support when time is critical. With a high number of visitors exploring remote areas around Queenstown, Glenorchy, Fiordland, and Mount Aspiring National Parks, accidents and emergencies are an unfortunate reality. Weather, terrain, and isolation all add to the challenge — and that’s where we come in.
Search and rescue is one of the most demanding aspects of our work. It requires precision, speed, and expert decision-making in real time. Our team brings an intimate knowledge of the landscape, from hidden alpine basins to narrow river valleys. This local insight often proves crucial during missions where every second counts.
Our helicopters are equipped for these operations. We operate with Human External Cargo (HEC) capability, allowing us to lift and transport rescuers or patients safely from otherwise inaccessible locations. Our pilots are trained in low-level navigation, with GPS mapping systems and advanced communication tools on board. We coordinate directly with other emergency services to ensure fast, safe, and effective outcomes.
Whether it’s an injured tramper, a lost hiker, or an urgent alpine extraction, we respond with purpose. We’re proud to be part of the wider emergency network helping to keep both locals and visitors safe in our region’s wild backcountry.
